Summer rain, stormy winds wreak havoc
The stormy winds followed by heavy summer rains that
lashed parts of the district for the past three days have wreaked havoc
in the high range
areas of the district.
At
least four houses were partially damaged and crops including rubber
were destroyed in the heavy rains in Kunnonni area in Poonjar
Thekkekkara panchayat near
Erattupetta. Hundreds of rubber were uprooted in the stormy winds.
The
houses were damaged as the trees fell on them. The Poonjar-Kunnonni
Road was also damaged in the rains. There are no reports of casualties.
The power lines in Kunnonni, Poonjar, Payyanithottam and Valathookku areas were also hit.
At
Kanamala, four houses were damaged in the heavy rains and winds that
lashed the area on Sunday. At one of the damaged houses a prayer group
had assembled, but all of them escaped unhurt.
Damages
to property has been reported from Vechoochira area also. The asbestos
roofs of commercial buildings in the town area were flown off in the
heavy winds. In many places, uprooted tress had fallen on power lines
brining down the electric posts with them. Most of these areas went
without electric supply on Sunday night and traffic on the inner roads
were disrupted.
